Mother Trumpeter Swan played quite the protector of her cygnet trio Thursday evening as the sun set - clearing Potter Marsh of intruders on several occasions all the way across the marsh into the Inlet side. The sun caught the fights, flights and feathers of those who would stay for a chilly evening, and those who know their time to go comes quick now.

With mother in the lead, the Potter Marsh Trumpeter Swan family takes off for a training flight Monday, October 12, and later, keeps an eye out while resting in the tall grass. Earlier, a group of some 20 swans had circled the marsh before leaving to the northeast.

Defending her brood from intruders of other swan families, the pen prepares to take flight to the northern edge of Potter Marsh. Mission accomplished, she files back and rejoins her cygnets.
